Homeschooling Tip of the Day

Mrs. G. has been homeschooling for twelve years. Yes, she's tired. If she recommends something, it is because her kids have loved it. She doesn't get free stuff from anyone, because Mrs. G's love can't be bought. It has to be earned.

If you have relatives or friends who are skeptical about homeschooling, just for fun, have your kids ask the following questions at the next social gathering: I forget, mom, how many quarters are in a dollar or what month comes after October? Then sit back and watch everybody try to change the subject and know, undoubtedly, they will talk about you after you leave. Really, it's fun.

Homeschooling Tip of the Day

Mrs. G. and her kids have tried so many language programs, but they all agree that this is the best one of all. They were able to access it through their public library's website...for FREE.

This game never goes out of fashion at Derfwad Manor. Mrs. G. can barely tolerate most boxed games (because she finds them stupid), but this is one she can play over and over again. It is also hugely popular in all of her writing classes. There is an Apples to Apples Jr. for the younger set. Mrs. G. recommends combining the cards from both the adult and junior version so that everyone can be happy.

Mrs. G. recently subscribed to this new magazine, and she really likes it.

Mrs. G. has been ordering stuff from this place since her children were very small-this is where she got her daughter's first pair of fairy wings and her son's finally-I'm-six! rubber tipped bow and arrow. Chinaberry has the best books, craft kits, toys and sweet treasures.

Mrs. G. isn't made of money, so she often browses through Chinaberry's book titles and then orders her favorites from the library. But when she has extra money, she likes to give it to them, because they are a family business and actual people answer their phone.

Mrs. G. loves myths and fairy tales, but she doesn't love them in her history books. She and her kids listened to this book on CD on one of their weekend road trips to Portland. They were all shocked and amazed and hooked--they kept driving around to hear more.

Homeschooling Tip of the Day

Both Mrs. G's are visual learners. These coloring books are a really great way to approach science, particularly if you can combine them with steady use of a microscope (Mrs. G's most expensive and beloved homeschooling tool). Mrs. G. is not a big believer in textbook based science curriculums. They're generally boring and dry. She has focused mainly on helping her kids learn basic, broad science concepts.
